Transfer Credit

Prior to a student’s arrival on campus, the Admissions Office, in conjunction with the appropriate Program Chairs and the Registrar’s office, determines transfer credit placement. MFA, MAT and Salt do not typically allow the transfer of credit into their programs. Any exceptions must be approved by both the graduate Program Chair and the Dean of the College.

BFA Transfer Credit Policy

In the BFA, MECA&D will award up to 60 credits in transfer credits for courses satisfying our curriculum requirements and completed with a grade of C or better. Only credits completed at regionally accredited colleges, universities or post-secondary professional schools will be considered. No more than 30 credits will be awarded for humanities coursework, 15 for art history coursework, and 36 in studio coursework. Official college transcripts are required in order for credit to be transferred. Course descriptions may be required, and visual documentation may need to be submitted in slide or digital format from courses for which studio credit is sought. All work submitted must be clearly labeled with the students’ first and last name.

If you are a current student who is planning to take a summer course and you would like to receive transfer credits for this work please refer to the following:
  • Make sure the school you would like to attend is regionally accredited.
  • Find the course(s) you are interested in taking and submit the course descriptions to the Office of Registration & Academic Advising by emailing registrar@meca.edu to determine whether the course or courses are transferable.
  • Once the course or courses are complete you will need to submit an official transcript to the Office of Registration & Academic Advising.
  • Undergraduate transfer courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Once the transcript is received, the Office of Registration & Academic Advising will apply the transfer credits to your Advising Worksheet. (The grade in the class you are transferring to MECA&D does not transfer or adjust the GPA you have earned at MECA&D).

Advanced Placement Credit

Incoming students with liberal arts or art history Advanced Placement (AP) scores of 4 or higher receive three college credit in each of those subjects. Students with studio art AP scores of 4 or higher will receive three credits toward studio elective or Foundation requirements based on an assessment by the Dean.

International Baccalaureate Credit

Incoming students with liberal arts or art history Higher-Level (HL) International Baccalaureate (IB) certificates with scores of 5 or higher will receive three college credits in each of those subjects. Students with studio art Higher-Level (HL) IB scores of 5 or higher will receive three credits toward studio elective or Foundation requirements based on an assessment by the Dean. Standard-Level (SL) scores or HL scores of less than 5 are not eligible for transfer.

AP, IB, and transfer credits do not carry quality points and are not included in the grade point average analysis of satisfactory progress in the College's curriculum.
