Transfer Scholarships
Maine College of Art & Design has merit-based scholarship funds designated specifically for transfer students. Admitted students are considered for merit scholarships ranging from $13,000–$21,000 per year, with particular attention to the strengths of their previous GPA and the portfolio submitted for admission.
These scholarships are renewable each year of enrollment, provided the student maintains good academic standing. Applicants must complete all admission requirements to be eligible for admission, scholarships, and financial aid.
How to Transfer
Members of our Admissions staff are available to meet with you to review your transcripts and determine how your previously earned credits will apply to our BFA curricular requirements.
We use the following guidelines to transfer your existing credits into our curriculum:
- A “C” or higher must be earned.
- Courses must be 100 level or higher (no remedial courses).
- Official transcripts must be submitted. Faxed or unofficial copies are not accepted as proof of credit.
- The college or university must be regionally accredited.
- Courses must be worth three credits (or five quarter hours).
In addition to the application requirements for the BFA program, transfer students (anyone who has previously matriculated at another college or university) must submit all transcripts for previous college or university attendance. This requirement includes colleges where you earned less than three credits or no credit at all (for example, you withdrew before completing coursework).
BFA Transfer Student FAQs
Why should I transfer to Maine College of Art & Design?
Maine College of Art & Design offers an immersive studio-based BFA program that values the unique perspectives of transfer students. You’ll benefit from a close-knit creative community, expert faculty mentorship, and strong support for maximizing your previously earned credits. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and professional preparation, giving you the opportunity to deepen your practice while building connections that extend well beyond the studio.
Can I transfer into any major within the BFA program?
Yes. Transfer students are welcome to pursue any major offered within the BFA program. During your transcript review and advising sessions, we’ll help you understand how your prior credits align with your intended major and what additional coursework will support your academic and creative goals.
How can transferring enhance my creative development?
Transferring can open new opportunities to refine your skills, explore different mediums, and expand your artistic network. Exposure to new faculty and peers can spark ideas and challenge your current perspective. Many transfer students find that a new setting helps them reconnect with their creative purpose.
Will I have access to the same resources as students who started in year one?
Transfer students have full access to the same studio spaces, equipment, faculty mentorship, and exhibition opportunities as their peers. You’ll be an integral part of the community from day one. Any additional support you need to acclimate will be available through advising and student services. Learn more about student life at Maine College of Art & Design.
How are transfer credits evaluated?
Credits are evaluated based on course level, grade earned, accreditation of the institution, and alignment with the BFA curriculum. An Admissions counselor will guide you through a transcript review to determine how your previous coursework fits into the program. This process ensures you receive credit for eligible courses and understand your path to degree completion.
How will transferring affect my time to graduation?
Time to graduation depends on how your previous credits apply to the BFA requirements. A transcript evaluation will give you a clear picture of what remains to complete your degree. Many transfer students are able to graduate on a similar timeline to first-year entrants, especially with early planning.
