On Wednesday, March 27, at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm), SPACE Gallery will screen the film This World is Not My Own. The innovative documentary shines a light on the life and work of Nellie Mae Rowe, a sharecropper's daughter and self-taught artist. Combining imaginative sets and animations with traditional documentary techniques, the film reimagines Rowe's experience as a Black woman and artist in the segregated South by weaving a visual tapestry filled with chewing gum sculptures, a firebrand wrestler, and a notorious murder case.
The screening is co-presented by Indigo Arts Alliance, SPACE, and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at Maine College of Art & Design. It is held in conjunction with James Allister Sprang's exhibition Rest Within the Wake, which is on view at the ICA at Maine College of Art & Design through April 6, 2024.
