Opening Reception for "On The Line"

On the Line interrogates the many lines that define and divide our society—class lines, bloodlines, color lines, thresholds, throughlines, and more. Through their work, more than 65 participating artists in this exhibition explore the origin, purpose, and impact of these divisions.

Many of the contributors are students from this semester’s course, The Color Line, which has examined the racial divides shaping America. Using W.E.B. Du Bois' insight that “The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line,” as a guiding thread, the artists reflect on how these divisions have evolved, and how art can reveal their hidden dynamics while suggesting new possibilities.

An opening performance of Claudia Rankine's The White Card will begin at 5:45pm.
